Current Favourite Art Supplies

A question I get asked a lot is what art supplies I use, more specifically what are my favourite Art supplies to use. Currently being a student, I don’t have a lot of money to spend on expensive art brands so I do have a gap in my art collection in term high end, however I still have a few favourites of mine I constantly use I thought I would show you. so here is my favourite current art supplies.

  1. Daler Rowney Graduate Acrylic 120ml

I currently have the colours Phthalo Blue, Titanium White, Black, and Pearl Black. I love these acrylic paints so much. Normally I use the cheap little tube paints from places like The Works and WHSmith. These paints are the only paints that I have found that are creamy and a little goes a long way. With other paints I have, I found that I have to use majority of the colour to paint an average surface area. With these Paints I can dilute the paint with water and still have a very opaque colour. I hundred percentage recommend these paints to any artist regardless if your a beginner or advance because they are high quality and cheap retailing at £3.60 for 120ml.

FullSizeRender[305]       2. Daler Rowney Simply Gold Taklon 7pcs acrylic Brush Set.  This brush set was given to me as a gift by a friend. It contains the 8 Flat Shader, 1/4 Angle Shader, 3/4 Flat Wash, 4 Filbert, 6 Round, 2 Round, and 1 Liner. These brushes are specifically designed for acrylic paints but can be used for oil and watercolour as well. I find that these brushes are easily workable and perfect for beginners who want something more than cheap brushes from places like B&M and The Works. Also these are the first few brushes that I have own from an Art Brand. Before these I have cheap, hard to work with brushes, so even though these brushes are my favourite ones I have currently, this can easily change wants I start to grow my collection with more high end brands. These brushes are also really afford for beginners retailing at £4.50 / 64p per a brush.

3. PÊBÊO Studio Acrylics Auxiliaries Modelling Paste High Density .  This Art Product became an instant favourite when I was in my first year of A levels. My Friend on my course has a craft room which contains all different art supplies influenced by her mum. I was introduced to Modelling Paste by her to create texture to my work, and to explain better what Modelling Paste is I have a definition below from Google.

“Molding, or modeling paste is an acrylic medium that is filled with solid material. The result is a thick “pasty” white substance that can create a controlled textural surface. Molding paste is an opaque white when it dries.”

This product is extremely easy to work with before it dries, however one dislike I have is that I find it hard to clean my palette knifes afterwards, so if anyone has any tips on how to reduce this or knows what equipment I should use to apply modelling paste, let me know below :). Overall, I just love the result of this product, especially as I can paint, pastel whatever over it.  Its defiantly one of a kind supply I have in my art collection. retailing at £2.19 on amazon for 100ml — BARGAIN!!!!

4. Inscribe Pastels 48 colours MPS. These Pastels have been the only pastels I have ever own.  I have loved these pastels after purchasing them 4 years ago. however as you can see the colours have blended on each other or have cracked now 😦 . This is mainly the reason I have decided for university to purchase a different brand – Faber- Castell, even though these are the pastels my university have recommended me to have. Even though these pastels now have got past their best, They have been great for me to develop my artistic skill over the years. If you are new to art and want to start with basic pastels these pastels I would highly recommend. If 48 colours are too much you can buy smaller packets of 12 or 24. These retail at £12.99, but currently amazon has them for £7.24 for 48 pastels/ 15p per pastel.

5. Daler Rowney 6pcs 2 in 1 Calligraphy Marker Set .  These Calligraphy Pens are again on of my most unique pieces in my art collection. I saw these maybe 3/4 years ago on offer at Sainsburys and decided to treat myself. I love how these pens flow and how smoothly I can create marks with them. I don’t particularly use these pens for Calligraphy  I know don’t yell at me haha but use them for as fine liners and to make title pages for my art work when I was at college. One feature I do enjoy about these markers is that the pens are 2 in 1, where there is a thin and a thick tip. I mainly have used the thin side for outlines and the thick part for filling in. I hope one day to get into calligraphy at some point where I hope to expand my creative skills and knowledge. These Pens currently retail at £16.99 / 2.83 per a pen, which is quite expensive for beginners, but there are many alternatives for these on the market. 🙂 I would recommend these more for the intermediate skilled.

6. Winsor and Newton Premarket Student Design Set. These ProMarkers are the latest addition to my art supply collection. I have only learnt at these pens in the last year whilst studying at art diploma. These pens in my opinion can be used for all art students or just artistic people in general however, I can see why they are targeted at certain groups. These groups are designers in general so architects, Interior Designers, Graphic Designers, Product and furniture Designers and finally Games Designers. They are the best pens I have found to use to colour in designs and WIP work. There smoothly and are extremely pigmented to began with. My only downside with these pens is that they van dry up quite quickly for the cost of them. I brought my original set above in January and the last time I used them was end of may and some colours have started to dry out. They retail at £59.99 which is extremely expensive but I’m afraid is a fraction of the price of extremely good quality brands, but amazon currently are selling them for £33.31. A 44% saving. However, if you are a beginner, normal felt tips might me a better option before purchasing these. For university, like the pastels, I am using a new brand called KureColor which the university have recommend me to buy.

7. Brian Clegg Waterproof Drawing Ink 600ml  This is the only Indian Ink I have owned myself. The term Indian Ink in reality is just drawing Ink. I love using it to create designs, and adds so much more depth in my artwork. I really love this massive 600ml and still have not even used half of it and its been over 2 years since I first purchased this. I know its not the best to use, with what is currently on the market. However, When I purchased this it was for me to learn and practice with ink, hence why I didn’t spend so much in case of spillage. You can buy different colours in drawing ink but yet to purchase any. Currently this ink is unavailable to buy but you can find alternative on eBay and amazon for cheap deals. If you are new to calligraphy or drawing ink I would recommend hugely to purchase cheap and in bulk drawing ink before moving up the ladder.

8. WHSmith Watercolour Tube Paints Set  . Finally I can not forget my watercolour tube collection. I was kindly given this 24 set as a birthday present many years ago and still have not used 1/4 of any tubes. Hugely pigmented and a small drop goes a long way as each paint needs to be diluted in water to give a watercolour effect. I do own watercolour ‘bricks’ or ‘solids’ but I prefer these. probably not the best for travelling – I prefer the Winston and Newton Travel set 24 for travelling as it includes a paint brush and 4 mini palettes in a tin. Anyways these colours work smoothly and just suit my style of art. Currently I wouldn’t use any other brand due to how I am quite happy with these but in the future I may do. These Paints retail on WHSmith’s website at £12.99 but currently are on offer for Back to School at £9.74/ 40.5p per a colour , a saving of 25%. I would recommend any skill and ability to purchase these.

I hope you enjoy this little blog post 👍🏻 sorry for not posting for over a week.. I have been busy with personal stuff. Anyways let me know your Current favourite Art supplies in the comments below, make sure to like this post and to follow my blog to miss anymore posts from me 👌

Get to Know Me- Relaunch of Artwithatwisthlm | 20 General Facts About Me Tag

Hello Art Nerds!!!

No long no see. I cant remember went I actually have used this blog as an actual blog :/ Sorry about that guys. However, I plan to start posting on this blog a lot more. I will try once a week, now I’m free till September and don’t have any plans apart from some events and holidays before I start university. So to celebrate the relaunch of my blog, I have decided to do 20 General Facts about me tag. I wanted to share more about me hence me doing this. If you guys would like to see more of an Artist based 20 facts tag, comment down below or on my Instagram @artwithatwisthlm #art_twisthlm20factsmore. So lets not ramble and get on with it :).

Fact 1) My Name is Hannah which was chosen to continue the family traditional. By this I mean the use of ‘ANN’ in names. As you can see my name of h’ANN’ah features this name which is popular throughout my mum’s side of the family. My nan’s middle name is ‘ANN’, my Mum’s middle name is ‘ANN’ and one of my cousins middle names is le’ANNe’ So my name was really given even though the other names considered for me had no connection. E.G: Krystal, Victoria or Alexa where also considered.

Fact 2) My Name is a Palindrome. If you don’t know what a Palindrome is or means, this may help. ‘a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backwards as forwards, e.g. madam or nurses run’. My name Hannah does this which is one quality that I love about it, but nowadays its so popularly in my opinion.

Fact 3) I share a birthday with my Grandad. So my birthday is shared with my grandad every year. Even though he’s not my blood grandad, he’s always and will be my grandad, as he’s the one I have always known to be my grandad as I haven’t ever known my actual grandad. Sharing our birthdays together, I feel like we have grown closer together.

Fact 4) My Birthday. My Birthday is December 31st, also more known as New Years Eve and the last day of the year. Not much more to say about this haha

Fact 5) Can Never Say my birthday is Next Year. As my birthday falls on the last day of the year, I can never say my birthday is next year apart from when it is my birthday. This is because the day after my birthday is January 1st, the first day of the year.

Fact 6) I have danced since I was 6. I started dancing from 6 years old doing Ballet, before moving onto Tap, then Acro, and Jazz and Freestyle. I still continue to dance today but in the foreseeable future is likely to quit due to university and opportunities.

Fact 7) My Cousin is Billy Sharp. Sheffield United FC Captain. Don’t need to say much more….

Fact 8) I Have worked in retail for 2 years. I’m not going to say where I work for security but yeah 🙂

Fact 9) I studied A levels and a Diploma. The reason why this happened is saved for another day but yes I’m classed as a ‘year behind’ but I’m okay with that now.

Fact 10) I’m Nineteen Years Old. 1997 makes me a 90s kid wooo.

Fact 11) I only enjoy listening to music in the car. This is because I have sensitive ears meaning headphones are really not great for me, and after a while my head hurts from listening to music so yeah. I cant wait to pass my driving test though so I can drive and sing as you do haha I hope I’m not the only one… let me know.

Fact 12) Favourite Singers. Ed Sheering, Ellie Goulding, Adele and Shaun Mendes. Just really love all there music not much more to say.

Fact 13) Favourite Bands. That Take because after seeing them live ahhhhh!!!!, Busted and Mcfly as they were my punk rock childhood and seeing them on tour together as one TWICE is the best thing alive!!!! One republic is the best band to listen to whilst concentrating on project deadlines, The 1975 because I feel so happy listening to them, and finally SMALLPOOLS!!!! Majority of you probably have no idea who they are but trust me, this small band with like 30k followers on Instagram are amazing. Was introduced to them last year by my BF and never looked back since.

Fact 14) I’m from Northern England and I have a raspy voice like a man. Northern girl at heart, but Jeeves my voice is rapsy so much regardless if I’m ill or not.

Fact 15) I’m an aspiring Interior Designer who hopes to have her own business at home. This is because I love creating a environment into an exciting space but I love to please people and if I can achieve that through my designs, it would be amazing especially at home where I can have a family life and travel more. I love Travel even though I can get anxious flying sometimes, its just a great adventure.

Fact 16) I have travelled abroad alone before… well without my parents. This year I travelled with a few friends to Lisbon in January on a art ‘college’ trip. The reason I put the word college in speech marks is for another day, but basically I survived by myself and with friends as “college” is useless. So flying alone to a country I have never been too and from London Stansted, which is an airport I have never been to, so was exiting and nervous.

Fact 17) Favourite Colours. Yellow, Green and Orange are my favourite colours as of right now! I don’t know if its because its summer or what but these colour together with tropical green prints AHHH!!!. I also love the simple look of whites and greys. I just think they are a beautiful, pretty colour.

Fact 18) Huge Harry Potter Fan!!! Being lucky enough to grow up with Harry Potter, I just love it! The World, The Plot, The characters, ALL OF IT. I’m both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw 🙂 Basically I believe I’m a Hufflepuff in and out but according to the Sorting Hat Quiz, I’m a Ravenclaw :/

Fact 19) Favourite Book. My favourite book is a single standing book as of now. Frozen Charlotte is just amazing. I have no words to descript it apart from that it hooks you in and I read the book within 3 days, which for me in good as I’m a slow reader. Its about these ‘charlotte’ dolls which original was played with children in a foster home 100 hundred years before and now the house is a home for a family, the dolls are free again . I don’t want to ruin it but honesty I love Fit. The prequel to the book  is expected this October called Charlotte Says!!!! The same month as Stranger Things 2 comes out on Netflix!!!

Fact 20) Favourite Animal. Owls are my life. honestly I have so much owl related objects its kind of ridiculous. But I also really love unicorns. Yes many of you may disagree that Unicorns are animals but I love them and I believe in majestic things, just like mermaids so yeah 🙂 be kind is what I’m trying to say.

If you’re still reading this comment ‘I like Pie below’. Anyways this is the tag finished. I hope you liked this and I plan to continue to post. During September 2016 to the end of October 2016, I was given the opportunity to participate in some life drawing classes. I had never done any life drawing before this and honestly had no idea how it would plan out. On this post is all my life drawings I have done over these 6/7 weeks. For a more zoomed in portfolio, check my behance account (link on about me page).

A4 Winsor & Newton (Not Ring bound) sketchbook | Product Review

A4 Winsor & newton hard back sketchbook | Fab or Fail |

After only using this sketchbook for 2 weeks I have a very strong opinion on whether I love it or hate it. I can confirm for my personal use that this sketchbook is totally a …..

I have NEVER in my art career even with cheap, scrap sketchbooks, had one where the pages literally fall out by turning the page to have a flat surface to work on. So far every page has done this and I have had to stick them back in using masking tape which ruins the look and feel of a ‘supposingly’ good sketchbook!!

As you can see down below the glue has separated to create holes which probably why the pages has fallen out. Considering the price of £11.99, I feel like this sketchbook is defiantly not worth it. I brought this sketchbook because I wanted a more ‘branded’ good quality sketchbook so I paid more for it as its one of the most known art brands in the UK, however this sketchbook has proven to be a disgrace and I hope this is just a faulty one not the whole batch :). Whilst I purchased this sketchbook, I also purchased the same brand in A3 that is ring bound. I’m not a fan of ring bound but I will see how that goes and I pray its better than this one.

I would rate this a 2/10. The paper is quite good quality however its impossible to work without sticking the pages in securely as they fall a move out.

Ceramics Lesson- Basics and Sprig Moulds

My first lesson of the current course UAL Level 3 foundation Diploma in Art and Design was a ceramics lesson learning the basics including wedging, kneading, rolling out etc.

I also learnt about relief imprints, an relief decorations. Creating marks using wooden tools to create designs free hand or using stamps such as above ‘PORTUGAL’ and creating texture to the clay.

I also experimented with sprigs | a mould to create a 3d relief decoration.| I used newspaper to create texture to my clay for the ‘Dementia brief’ to represent decaying skin. I used a face sprig to give a typical base of a face to work on. I wouldn’t say my ceramics is the best of my work but this blog is to share my journey :).

In the end I didn’t go ahead with the ceramics as apart of my dementia project (will be clear in the next weeks when I upload posts). however I gave it my best shot. that’s my piece of advice to you all- just try your best regardless

Life Drawing Class #2

On 27th September 2016, I experienced my second life drawing class. In this class, we looked at adding shadowing and creating marks with different medium and experimenting with mixed media.

The mediums I have used are:

  • Oil Pastels and Charcoal
  • Oil Pastels and Watercolour
  • Charcoal and Pastels

My Oil Pastel life drawing was inspired by Picasso, I can really see an improvement to last weeks life drawings and I can really see the volume and the proportions are even. My Watercolour and Oil Pastels life drawing was inspired by De Kooning. My intentions were to use bright colours, majority neon. However, my proportion of the drawing wasn’t as accurate. Something to work on next lesson. The Charcoal and Pastels life drawing is excellent for my first freehand life drawing (not in pencil) in colour. However, I need to work on marking shadowing and highlighting areas. I can work on my next life drawing creating a black and white version similar to Jenny Saville’s triple figures.

Overall, I was pleased with my 3 life drawings for my second life drawing class ever! defiantly one of them will appear on my Digital Portfolio.

Life Drawing Class _ #1

Hey artists 👍🏻 on the 20th September 2016 I went to my first ever life drawing class. I was slightly anxious as I have never done life drawing before and my previous experiences of life drawing as in people’s faces for artist research and hands etc hasn’t been my speciality.

I plan to add posts here of my life drawing and to look back on how it has improved over the next few months etc ☝🏻️😎

This particular life drawing session we looked at proportion, volume and scale 👘. I’m not the best at it but I want to share it regardless as its my work and my development in my career.
